Shikata ga nai. It can't be helped.

In 1940’s America, Kenji, a young Japanese American, is thrown behind the barbed wire gates of the concentration camps. Under executive order 9066, his family, friends, and many others are held captive across the country. Yet, despite the raging war, Kenji’s artistic spirit does not falter under the hands of the government.

“I want the world to know. Know the truth about what really happened in the camps. I don’t care what kind of punishment I’ll get for this.”

Written by Lexie Morita, Illustrated by Enchi Huang, Stephanie Jing, Jennifer Nieto, Arion Togelang

Brought together by the 2024 Kizuna Leadership in Action program, Lexie Morita, Josiah Hankerson, Krystal Tran, Landa Hong, and Rianna Marquez bonded over their shared concern for human rights. They believe that education is one of the most important factors to inspire the future generations. By working countless hours over the course of many weeks, they have brought forth all of their efforts to create a children’s book that sheds light on Japanese American Incarceration.
